Dear Yuletide Writer
Oct. 11th, 2018 08:37 pmThanks so much for writing something for me! I'm
originally on AO3 and most other platforms. My letter has several parts: general preferences; tropes and narrative stuff I like; porn stuff I like; stuff I don't want; and fandom specific discussion and prompts. My prompts aren't meant to be prescriptive; if you have ideas for something different that fits one of my general likes, or you want to combine elements from different prompts, I'm totally open to that.
Gen is welcome but I've also indicated where I have preferred ships. I enjoy lots of genres of fic, including character studies, casefic, missing scenes, worldbuilding, and canon divergences and what-ifs. I generally prefer things to be bittersweet and maybe a bit angsty. I'm happy to receive a gift of any rating, including smut and PWP. In terms of format, I'm open to anything. I love all kinds of unusual and experimental stuff if that's your thing, including but not limited to found footage; mixed media; non-linear; vignette forms; epistolary; interactive fiction; and metafiction. I don't have any preferences for tense or POV.
My trope or narrative likes include:
My kink/porn likes include:
And finally, please do not include any of the following in the gift:
Android: Netrunner
Any
Deus Ex
David Sarif
Good Girls
Beth Boland, Rio
Killing Eve
Eve Polastri, Carolyn Martens
The Technomancer
Andrew Mancer
The Wicked + The Divine
1831 Woden

Android: Netrunner
Any
- I selected any here because I'm equally interested in stories about the nominated characters or in worldbuilding more generally. I love cyberpunk generally and the broader dystopian corporation type themes, but for Netrunner I have a particular interest in the non-Western versions: the Indofuturism stuff from the Mumbad cycle or the Japanese themes from Jinteki. What's daily life like for people in this world?
- I'd love to read something that plays around with the neonoir/technoir tonal stuff. These characters would work really well as a hardboiled cop (Inez, Sunny) or hard-ass cynics (Director Haas) or even drawing on the dark sexuality-type themes of noir as part of the wider universe (especially with Adam or another of the bioroids like Alix)
- Something that works the mechanics into the narrative would be great. Heistfic about a runner stealing something or someone (Inez?) trying to stop them could be fun.
- Explorations of bioroids and free will. What does it mean for Adam to obey or defy his directives?
- In terms of ships, I'm open to pretty much anything here. I did enjoy the dynamic between Inez and Bios in Terminal Directive and would love to see more of them interacting.
Deus Ex
David Sarif
- I'd love a character study that really delves into David's thought process at some point during the games. It could be pre-HR, when he's already messing with Adam's genes and arranging that medical proxy; or something around Darrow's mentorship and eventual death - how much did David really know about what was going on? Or maybe about his own augs? Presumably the idea that the arms was for better baseball is BS, but what's the real story?
- It would be really cool to see him interact with some of the characters from Mankind Divided. Would he and Koller bond over the coolness of augs? Would he drive Mac crazy? Would he clash with Miller over who has Adam's best interests at heart?
- In terms of ships, I have ideas for several diffferent ones below:
- David/Darrow: I love mentorship dynamics when it comes to ships and this is a really interesting one. I'd love to see something from their early time working together. Did they ever clash over their different backgrounds? What about Hugh's reaction to David's augmentations - jealousy? Lust? Both? Something set either immediately before or after Panchaea could be interesting, exploring Darrow's rejection of their ideals.
- David/Koller(/Adam): So, I just think this could be a really fun ship. Koller is super into Adam's SI tech so would that transfer to the man himself? How would David deal with Koller's, er, level of enthusiasm? Or would they maybe clash, since Koller doesn't seem to share David's idealist transhumanist politics?
- David/Miller(/Adam): I feel like this would be the snarkiest pairing or threesome ever. I don't even know how they would end up in the same place - maybe after the London mission, or Sarif's help is needed on a TF29 thing somehow, or Jim just calls him up to complain about Adam after Adam does his insubordinate thing one to many times. I don't even care how much you have to handwave to get them together, because I'm mostly interested in the dynamics between them. Possessiveness over Adam would be particularly amazing, and Adam kind of long-sufferingly having to mediate.
- David/Adam: I really want them to deal with the elephant in the room: what would it look like for Adam to confront David about what he did? What would it take to get him to that point? Alternatively, I really like the idea of David having to be the one who saves Adam for once. If you wanted to throw in an Adam clone as well, I wouldn't be opposed.
- This is a slightly random prompt but I've been craving an AU where David is a woman. What would go differently? What would be the same? I'd particularly love f!David to be paired with either canon Adam or a female version of Adam.
Good Girls
Beth Boland, Rio
- I think these two have the most crackling chemistry and it really seems inevitable that they will sleep together at some point. I like Rio's swagger, and that he is also really fucking smart and genuinely good at what he does, and that Beth is similarly smart and bored and an incredibly good liar. There's so much potential here.
- My main prompt is hatesex. I'd prefer the kind that doesn't turn into fluffy feelings, that always feels a bit dirty and rough, but where Beth has a lot of control. I'd prefer not too much hitting or punching but I'd love biting, bruising and pushing against walls, with that simmering resentment and the whole "shouldn't want this but can't get enough" angle. I think she likes how dangerous he is and he likes the idea of dirtying her perfect Stepford image, but they're both in denial that they could genuinely be attracted to each other.
- Mindgames. Both of them trying to play the other. Would Beth ever manage to get ahead of him? Could she ever manage to topple him, or maybe there's a version of the story where she becomes a legitimate rival?
- Generally, I would be down for casefic/heistfic in this fandom, particularly if they had to put aside their feelings and work closely together for a job.
Killing Eve
Eve Polastri, Carolyn Martens
- I love their slightly weird mentorship dynamic. Eve teases Elena for her crush but I thought it was pretty clear that she had some hero worship going on as well. I think it could be really interesting to explore, and especially to think about how they might move from that to sex.
- Something that delved into Carolyn's shady spy activities could be really interesting (I haven't read the books so I'm not sure what the actual story is going to be, but speculation is fun). I'd especially love some cat-and-mouse as Eve investigates her but tries not to let on. Or even something focused on her Cold War spying adventures in her youth.
- I liked how straightforward Carolyn was about the idea of other spies trying to honeypot her. If Eve tried to seduce her, would she think the same? Would she go along with it anyway?
- It must be pretty lonely in the job Carolyn's in and her personal life is clearly a disaster. I'd be equally happy with something where they try hard and make it work or something where they fail.
- Maybe something where Eve asks Carolyn for her memories of Bill. More generally I'd enjoy something addressing Eve's grief and anger over his loss.
The Technomancer
Andrew Mancer
- Despite a bunch of clunkiness, I really liked this game. It had some fun characters and some cyberpunk themes that I always find interesting (particularly the underlying humans/metahumans/mutants conflict, although I'm also always a sucker for religion-tinged space brotherhoods with strong mentorship dynamics, thanks Star Wars). The worldbuilding has so much unrealised potential that would be cool to see explored in fanworks: what is daily life for technomancers like in peacetime? Or for the other Mars denizens? Does the average person think about Earth that much, or is the concept more like a distant fairytale? How do the various ending options change that?
- Andrew was my instant fave. I would love something with him readjusting to life with his rediscovered technomancy. It must be a big adjustment to make, suddenly having things that he lost and grieved and got used to being without: his arm, his powers, membership of a brotherhood, a master. Are there downsides
- Alternatively, you could focus on his years away--what kind of adventures did he have as a merchant? Or maybe a piece about older Andrew and his technomancer apprentices.
- Andrew/Zach: The dynamic between these two is so great. Childhood friends who reconnect after years apart, but with power differentials and mentorship aspects? Yes please. The scene where Zach initiates Andrew was brilliant and I'd love something that played with these issues some more. Andrew's intense desire for a technomancer master and his borderline hero-worship of Zach as 'someone I want to be like', and Zach's new dual role as both mentor and lover. How do they negotiate that, in the field and in the bedroom? And particularly after Zach becomes Great Master? How do Andrew's daddy issues intersect with Zach's? How do they deal with conflicts that arise, like if Zach makes the secrecy choice against Andrew's advice? Or adjusting to their new self-conception and societal role as mutants rather than humans?
The Wicked + The Divine
1831 Woden
- Woden's entire 1830s aesthetic was amazing: the dress, the steampunk monacle, the mechanical raven, the winged helm. I'd love to read something focused on Mary Shelley's mechanical genius, or really anything to flesh out this version of the character. Maybe draw on some of Mary Shelley's real life badassery? She kept her dead husband's blackened heart after his funeral pyre (or maybe just something she thought was the heart but who cares?).
- Her sisterly relationship with Inanna. Did she know how jealous Inanna was? There's something really interesting in Inanna being the one who covets powers in 1831 where that has been Woden in other Recurrences.
- I love Norse mythology in general so anything that draws more of it in to the WicDiv world would be awesome.
- I also have a longstanding interest in the Lake Poets and the whole English Romantic set in general, so if you wanted to write something set in this period of canon including the other gods I would be delighted (naturism, opium smoking... they're really ripe for exploring the more hedonistic themes of WicDiv).
